There’s a question I get asked all the time: “How do you choose your colours?”
Colour is one of the first things I reach for when I begin a project because it sets the tone for everything that follows. At Studio Sarai, every palette is chosen with purpose. It’s my way of translating the beauty and character of the Australian landscapes into a visual language that feels honest and alive.
I draw inspiration from places that hold a quiet kind of magic. The open coastline with its clear blues. The stillness of the bush. The warm, earthy tones of the outback. And the bright notes of native flora always seem to appear at the perfect moment. These colours remind me of connection, grounding and possibility, and my journey to living in the beautiful country, my chosen home, Australia.
When I weave those colours into a design, it’s about giving that same sense of meaning to the work. Letting people feel something familiar, comforting and deeply rooted the moment they see it. For me, that’s where the story really begins.
The Creative Process
My work always starts outdoors. Before any piece comes to life in the studio, I spend time noticing what is happening around me. I walk along the coastline near home, take my boys for a walk in nearby parks or bushlands, or watch quiet sunsets across at the beach. These moments help me understand what colours want to be part of the next piece.
I pay attention to how the light shifts during the day and how it changes the colours in the landscape. Sometimes the afternoon sun brings out soft pinks in the soil or quiet lavender tones in the dust. These simple observations become the foundation of my palette. They influence the timber I choose and the pigments I mix once I return to the studio.
My love for form and design began back home in Berlin, but it was Australia that taught me how to see colour in a deeper way. The landscape here offers endless inspiration and continues to guide every mosaic I create.
Translating the Australian Palette
So, what does a specific environment “sound” like in wood? My entire philosophy is built around translating these natural energies into palettes that resonate with human emotion. Here are a few core ones that keep coming back to me:
- Coastal Rhythms: I’m always chasing the ocean’s spectrum. From the deep, moody navy of a winter storm to the pale, milky turquoise of a sheltered bay kissed by sunlight. These aren’t just blues; they are the serenity and rhythm of waves, captured in timber.
- Forest Mysteries: The bush is a riot of texture and hidden colour. You see everything from the near-black green of dense, mossy undergrowth to the pale, silver-green of towering eucalypts. Translating these into a mosaic is about capturing the calm, shaded mystery of the forest floor, a place of peace and contemplation.
- The Warm Earth: Nothing is more grounding than the ochres, golds, and burnt reds of the Australian soil. These tones bring an incredible warmth and permanence to a space. When I use these colours, I’m trying to bring the grounding essence of the outback right into your living space, like a cosy blanket.
- Vibrant Accents: The small, unexpected pops of colour, the deep crimson of a Waratah, the bright orange flare of a Banksia, these elements add energy and movement. They are the little sparks of life that stop the eye and draw you into the design, reminding you of nature’s joy.
Partnering with the Wood
The timber itself is my first material, and it always comes with its own incredible personality. Every plank has a unique story: a distinct grain pattern, a natural tone, a subtle imperfection. I don’t try to cover this up. I welcome it.
We use a lot of reclaimed timber, which carries a tangible history, a nail hole here, a faded patina there. This history informs the artwork, giving the final piece a depth that feels authentic. My job is to listen to the wood, respect its character, and combine its natural state with subtle pigments to achieve harmony. This partnership between the old material and the new design is the essence of sustainable art and thoughtful craftsmanship, a true collaboration.
Bringing Nature into Your Sanctuary
Colour, light, and texture are the foundation of mood. I choose palettes not just because they look beautiful, but because of how they make you feel in your space:
- Cool blues and soft greens invite comfort and connection, making them ideal for a bustling living room or dining area where life happens.
- Warm ochres and earth tones are perfect for bedrooms or reading nooks, evoking immediate calm and serenity, a visual exhale after a long day.
When you hang a Studio Sarai mosaic, you’re not just filling wall space. You’re inviting a moment, a flash of green after a rain shower, the deep warmth of a fiery sunset, into your daily life. It’s a beautifully crafted bridge between the wild, beautiful world outside and the sanctuary you’ve built inside.
I hope our work helps you feel that rhythm of the coast, the peace of the forest, or the deep, grounding warmth of the earth, right where you stand.
